19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player won his initial trophy for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.

The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid season, winning just one match at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in specific - caused him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-term coach his previous coach.

Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has consistently advanced in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set win over Frenchman Moutet.

It is his first title since the Rome competition and first on a hard surface after that period of the previous year.

Victory also signifies the Russian has achieved twenty-one titles at 21 different competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a event with my both daughters together, so to secure a trophy is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This championship is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

His defensive strategy and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had caused some to wonder if his ability to perform at the elite level was finished.

But the player has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.

Medvedev came back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging Frenchman, winning 4 of the last five games to go ahead.

Both players swapped breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his first professional championship, gained dominance to create a decider.

He defended four early break points in a tight third set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, the winner earned the title with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to control a shot after a lengthy match.
